AC Deathstrike-Winter in Russia. Self Released, 2011.

When I reviewed AC Deathstrike’s previous album, Last Picture Show, I said that they had this kind of indie rock/twee thing going on. It’s louder than most twee, but it still keeps the vocals and basic sensibilities of a twee album. Just about everything I said about that album also applies to their newest effort, Winter in Russia.

Right from the start of this album, when the acoustic guitar is met with the fuzzy synthesizer, I said to myself, “This sounds like my Pandora Station. Hell, this sounds like my life.” Like the previous album, this album is “full of happy energy,” even when it becomes slightly melancholy, such as on “Open Your Eyes.” A couple of the songs, such as “Simple Explanation in Motion,” remind me of …and You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, with their wall of sound built from constant cymbal crashes, synthesizer tones, and harmonies.

On Winter in Russia, like on Last Picture Showm AC Deathstrike manage to be Twee without being overly precious and Indie without being whiny.

Winter in Russia is available on the band’s Bandcamp page for whatever you want to pay for it. This means that technically, you can get it for free, but don’t be a dick. These guys are bringing it, and they deserve a couple of dollars for their efforts.
