Sea of Bees- Gnomes EP. Crossbill Records, 2011.

Jules Bee’s newest release, Gnomes EP, under her one-woman band name Sea of Bees, shows two completely different sides of her. The song “Gnomes,” as well as it’s remix by Tunng paints her as a freak-folker, strumming along on her guitar and sounding ghostly, breathy, and slightly mischievous. At times on this track, she lets her voice rise to an almost unintelligible wail like Josephine Olausson of Love is All. That’s a good thing, by the way. The other two tracks have her softly caressing her covers of U2’s “With or Without You” and Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” Both sides of her are equally haunting, and equally enjoyable, though her covers are more “traditional” sounding than her original song.

There are only 4 tracks on the EP, so it’s not much to judge her on, but I have to say that I want to hear more. If her previous album, Songs For The Ravens sounds anything like this EP, I’m sold.

Gnomes EP comes out August 29th on Crossbill Records.
