Eastern Phoebes-Gypsy Paw. Self-released, 2011.

You might remember me talking about Eastern Phoebes’ free-to-download Wampum a few months ago. Well, they’re back with a free-to-download EP, Gypsy Paw. This is their third release in less than a year, which puts them at a year-to-date pace with the Mountain Goats, I think.

Anyway, Gypsy Paw is good stuff. It’s kind of weird because, looking back at their previous album, this is definitely the same band. You would not mistake them for anyone else…their sound is intact, and yet they’ve dropped some of the “old-timeyness” from Wampum. On my Twee Metric(tm), this album is much more Belle & Sebastian than the last one, but it’s still not baroque chamber pop. Eastern Phoebes manages to create their own sound within the Twee genre, without really telegraphing their influences.

There are only 5 songs here, and they’re all good. “Combat Missile Diploma” is surprisingly dark for a Twee album, and I love the hilariously-named “I’m Gonna Bite Your Head Off When I’m Done Making Love To You.” There’s a song on here about LeBron James, which I like despite the fact that, as a non-sports-fan Clevelander, I am tired of hearing about LeBron. The song is less about sports and more about the psychology ofknowing you are the best. It’s a nice approach.

As I said earlier, this EP is free to download from the band’s Bandcamp page, so go get it. While you’re at it, get their other stuff, too. It’s awesome.
