Review: Nick Jaina-The Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Gone by jason

Nick Jaina-The Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Gone. Self Released, 2011.

Nick Jaina’s he Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Gone is kind of an odd bird. Singer/songwriter Jaina doesn’t actually sing on any of the songs on his newest release. Instead, he has recruited the likes of Laura Gibson, Jolie Holland, and Kaylee Cole amongst other songstresses. The result is a beautiful mix of americana, alt-country, and lounge.

I’ve listened to this album four or five times this week, and though it’s probably premature to say this, I’m willing to bet this is going to be on my “top albums of 2011” list in December. It’s that good. “The President of the Chess Club,” sung by Amanda Spring of Point Juncture WA, is manages to be nerd music without tripping my angst towards Nerd-Brand(tm) music. “Awake When I’m Sleeping” featuring Audie Darling, has a kind of less-minimalist Mazzy Star vibe, and “Once But Never Again” with Luzelena Mendoza has a kind of dark Lounge sound.

This whole album is fantastic. There’s no filler, and just like many of my favorite albums, the whole thing, even when patched together from different music styles and different vocalists, really feels like a complete work rather than a collection of songs.

The album may be purchased digitally on Jaina’s website. A physical incarnation is soon to come.

“Once But Never Again” feat. Luzelena Mendoza
