Dino DNA-s/t. Self-released, 2011.

I talked about seeing Dino DNA live in this recent post. If I were the kind of critic who was prone to hyperbole, I would say that Dino DNA “sounds like Nirvana has sex with the Ventures, then bit the Ventures’ heads off, praying mantis-style. Nirvana gave birth to Dino DNA from that pairing, and raised them on a steady diet of The Ramones.”

I’m not prone to hyperbole, so I won’t say that.

Instead, I’ll say that Dino DNA’s self-titled debut is dumb, loud, and completely awesome. It’s rock n’ roll that doesn’t care what you think of it. In “Sports,” they challenge the listeners to a game of basketball, so that they “can dunk on you, and you, and you, and you, and you, and you!” It’s not often that you hear a musical act, especially one with a surf-punk sound and a hipster’s aesthetic, brag about it’s members’ athletic prowess. They also claim that they actually have Dino DNA in the the song of the same name.

OK, so a lot of this album is kind of jokey. It really sounds like these guys are having fun, and they don’t really have a “message,” but you know what? You don’t need a message. And when half of each song is just them yelling “wooooooaaaaaah!”, you can enjoy this on a purely emotional level without all those pesky words getting in the way.

So yeah. Dino DNA. They have a good beat, I can dance to it, and it’s available for free on their bandcamp page, so if you’re not listening to this, I don’t know what to tell you.
