For this week’s edition of Any Asshole, I’m looking at people covering songs I’ve been listening to lately. And really, that’s as much as an intro as this thing needs at this point.

This week’s first Asshole is Angele, who covers Phoenix’s “Lisztomania.” It’s a hard song to sing, but she does it well. In her profile, she says that her English isn’t very good, her being French and all, but it sounds more intelligible than the original version. There’s something kind of sweet about her delivery of this song.

Next up is James M. Leo doing a pretty dead on cover of The Mountain Goats’ “Estate Sale Sign,” off their new album, All Eternals Deck. What can I say about this…it’s a great cover of an equally great song.

And now, it’s the time you’ve all been waiting for…The Obligatory MGMT Cover(tm). Usually, that cover is “Kids,” but this time, we have Mason Van Valin covering “Time to Pretend.” This guy’s got skills. Like, mad skills. He can sing, he can play guitar, and he can look like Michael J. Fox in Bright Lights, Big City. Seriously, though, check out his YouTube page. He’s good.

And finally, here’s YouTube user(s) VanSchouteeten covering…Phoenix’s “Lizstomania.” I’m picking this song again because this duo’s two-man version of the song is loud, energetic, and entirely dissimilar to Angele’s cover. It’s almost an entirely different song. I don’t even think one is better than the other…they just do two different things.

That’s it for this week’s Assholes! Come back next week for more Assholes!
