Pt. 2: GEEK MUSIC FOR GEEKS-WIZARD WROCK or: Why You Gotta Do a Thing?

Last week, I wrote about music targeted at nerds and how the nerds should be smart enough to know a gimmick.

However, now I want to go into a darker place in nerd-music culture. A place where I have seen the worst of geekdom. A place that shakes the very core of my nerdy soul.

Wizard Wrock.

I hear you asking “What’s that, jason?” Well, since you asked, let’s take a look at good ol’ trusty Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia:

Wrock bands mostly consist of young musicians that write and perform often humorous songs about the Harry Potter universe, and these songs are often written from the point of view of a particular character in the books, usually the character who features in the band’s name. If they are performing live, they may also cosplay, or dress as, that character…

...or as Billy Corgan.

This isn’t just a couple people doing this. They have Harry Potter-themed festivals for this stuff, like the NYC Wrock Festivaland Wrock Chicago. Like, this is an entire musical subculture.

The line for a Wrock show. Also pictured: virginity.

So what does it sound like?

So yeah. It’s that bad.

And the fans get in on this too. Here’s an “active” playing a song in the genre. I have no idea what language that is she’s speaking at the beginning.

“You’ll only taste Hagrid if you go and lick his beard.”
Actually, that’s not what I heard.

Basically, what we have here is Novelty Music. It’s like “Weird” Al Yankovic…amusing, I guess. Perhaps even talented. But really…why you gotta do a thing? At best, you’re reinforcing the stereotype that the Harry Potter superfans are a bunch of ubergeeks with no real social skills and no sense of the world around them. And at worst…same thing, really.

If you like Harry Potter, that’s cool. I’m all for reading. But this is really too much. Consider this an intervention, fellow nerds: Get off the Wrock!

Yeah. I want to call that girl’s parents and tell them to get their daughter off the wrock before it’s too late.
