Review: Thou – Summit by Jayson

Some other review I read said Summit is Thou’s Oceanic. I Since I love review by comparison, I am totally down with that statement. Tyrant is the ‘artistic leap forward album.’

That being said, I don’t think it matters much. It’s a leap forward, but a small one. A hop forward. Thou is still Thou. Listening to this you’re still going to be pummeled by the riffs and blasted by the vocals. Reading over the lyrics, nothing thematic seems to have changed. Thou’s philosophy remains consistent. In fact, the refrain of ‘nothing has changed’ on the last track is nearly accurate regarding Summit.

None of that is a bad thing at all though. They’ve introduced some quieter moments into their new work, in that regard they do sound a bit like Isis, but just a bit. Thou still sound like Thou. They still sound great. This is one of the best bands going in heavy music today. Summit will likely be on my top 10 for 2010.

A note on the packaging: Thou have put all their stuff online, Summit isn’t up yet, but I assume it will be someday. This is worth picking up in CD format. Gilead did a really nice job. You’ve got a booklet printed on heavy paper with all the lyrics and this a piece of canvas cloth with a screen print on it. Pretty cool.
