I love Jarvis Cocker, and I am pretty sure this was meant as an homage and not a direct rip off. That said, this is a direct rip off.

I actually thought that Dion song was originally from the Arctic Monkeys. Jarvis has always been known to lift or sample tunes from various artists like Laura Branigan and Lee Hazelwood but he always credit them no matter how popular or obscure the song. Dion was part of his compilation album The Trip so he knows him well. Not sure if Dion was credited in his first solo album for the use of the intro.
Crimson and Clover song was sampled in Cocker’s song Black Magic (from same album). And yes, Tommy and the Shondells were credited.

Yeah…I checked, and he doesn’t give credit for this song. Obviously, he does for sampling Crimson and Clover, though. It’s a shame, because I have a lot of respect for Cocker, and this makes me feel all conflicted.
