Any Asshole with a Violin and a Camera by jason

To Eleven reader Beth sent me a link to a guy playing the violin and suggested we do an all-violin edition of “Any Asshole.” Well, Beth, that sounds like a plan to me, so this week’s assholes are classy as hell.

Here’s an observation I made while looking for violin covers: If a man is playing violin of YouTube, he is most likely Asian. I’m not sure why this is, but it’s a thing. Also, I found a woman to post up here, so that this post wasn’t so phallocentric, but in doing so, I noticed that if a woman is playing violin on YouTube, she is probably playing something from the Final Fantasy games. This, too, is a thing. I’m going to send some researchers out there to use SCIENCE!!! and figure out what the deal is here.

Anyway, first up, here’s Jimmy Chaos, completely nailing Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” This is awesome. If you have epilepsy or are sensitive to strobe lighting, you might want to look away from your monitor.

This next guy is Paul Dateh, the one that Beth sent me. He’s doing a violin mash-up of Lady GaGa’s “Telephone,” Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah,” Rihanna’s “Rude Boy,” and Usher’s “OMG.” Any Asshole plus Mash-up? Sure! He relies a little too much on editing for my tastes, but he really couldn’t pull this off without it, so he gets a pass.

And finally, here’s reiofthesilvermoon, who, despite her name and gender, is NOT covering something from a video game. However, she is covering Journey. I hate Journey. Even so, hearing “Open Arms” played on violin is kind of nice. She says she’s just practicing, but 1) it’s on YouTube, so it counts, and 2) it’s better than a couple of other violin covers of this song I’ve seen.

And that’s it for Any Asshole this week. If you liked these performances, go to their YouTube pages and tell them where you heard them!
