Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox-Various Artists

I’ll start off by saying that I’m ashamed to admit I hadn’t even heard of Chris Knox before this collection came out. Since then, I’ve gone on YouTube and looking for his stuff, but there’s not much out there. What there is sounds pretty good…kind of like early Robyn Hitchcock. Anyway, last year, Chris Knox had a stroke, so a bunch of artists got together and recorded Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox to help him pay his medical bills.

To be honest, the main reason I wanted this collection was because of who was involved. Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields sing “Beauty,” a song which, thematically, sounds like a Magnetic Fields songs anyway. Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel came out of cave to do “Sign the Dotted Line.” The Mountain Goats give a kick ass performance of “Brave.” Even Chris Knox’s band comes out, WITH post stroke Chris Knox, to contribute “Napping in Lapland,” complete with slurred, incoherent vocals.

The price tag is a little high for this collection, but with 36 songs, it’s well worth the price. Not only is it a good album, but it’s gotten me interested in tracking down some of Knox’s work.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any of the tracks up on YouTube, but HERE’S A LINK to the Mountain Goats contribution. I might be biased, but it’s my favorite track on the thing.
